20th anniversary of the Race Equality Directive

On 29 June 2020, an online conference took place to celebrate 20th anniversary of the Race Equality Directive (2000/43/EC), adopted by the Council of Europe in 2000.

For this purpose, Praxis recalled a case of discrimination of an internally displaced Roma family in the village of Sirča from 2014, in which the Commissioner for Protection of Equality filed charges of discrimination and criminal charges against former Head of the Local Community Office in Sirca who organized protests and incited local population in Sirca to protest against settlement of internally displaced Roma. This case shows the importance of timely and efficient institutional protection in combatting discrimination and hate speech.
